JOHN ADAMS' DEATH / THOMAS JEFFERSON'S DEATH / JAMES MONROE'S DEATH

events occurring on the Fourth of July

Read on:

As you know, Adams, Jefferson, and Monroe were the second, third, and fifth U.S. presidents.

Adams & Jefferson were the only two presidents to sign the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of its signing, a big celebration was planned. They both declined to go, on account of their health. It turns out that they both died that day.

(Incidently, Stephen Foster was born that day.)

Five years later, on July 4, 1831, President Monroe died. Isn't that cosmic?
